The prize for correctly answering the questionn was a gift certificate for a pizza graciously donated by Long Valley Pizza.
Cindy Rhodes, of Califon, a town resident, was the first person to correctly supply the answer to the quiz, and was given her gift certificate. The question was:
On what date did the Township Governing body first meet in the German Valley School?
Answer:
The Township committee first met in the German Valley School on January 8, 1918. The Township organizational meeting on January 1, 1918 was held in Fireman's Hall, but all the subsequent meetings for the year were held in the School House.
An inference may be made that Chapter 192 of the Laws of 1917 had an effect on the meeting place for the committee, as the law is specifically mentioned as having a requirement the budget meeting be publicly announced and publicised. Additionally, the budget was passed at the third meeting of the year and the fact the meeting was opend to the public was specifically recorded.
The 1917 organizational meeting met at Kice's Hall, (part of the building still stands. It is the stone structure between the NE corner of Schooley's Mountain Road and East Mill Road and the river.) In contrast to the 1918 meeting, there was no mention of a budget for the Township in the minutes of any of the meetings for the first half of 1917. The Committee agreed to continue to meet in Kice Hall if a room for a safe and locker for filing was provided for $25 a year. Lyman Kice was the tax collector in 1915.
It was decideded at the May 19th, 1917 meeting, the committee would use the room in "the new school building if the board finishes it up for that purpose". Since that meeting in 1918 the school was generally the meeting place of choice.
