We are in the height of hurricane season, and with storms like Hurricane Matthew receiving heavy media coverage, it's a good time to remind all residents of our local emergency operating procedures.

When major storms have the potential to threaten us locally, the Washington Township Police and First Responders receive up-to-date weather information directly from the Emergency Management division of the NJ State Police.

If extreme weather is likely to impact us, we will typically activate our Emergency Operations Center at police headquarters when the storm is several days away. One of the first things we will do is share the most current and accurate information to the community using the municipal website, as well as through the Nixle email/mobile messaging system and our local news and radio partners.

Prior to the actual arrival of the extreme weather, municipal leadership is ensuring that all of our key resources – including police, public works, first aid, fire, health and structural inspectors – are "at-the-ready" with a coordinated response plan to help ensure the community's safety during the event and quick recovery.

If you haven't already signed up for the Nixle alerts to your email or mobile phone, we urge you to do so. Simply click on the following link and follow the step-by-step instructions -- http://www.wtmorris.org/index.php/19-township-news/1218-signup-for-township-updates.html?platform=hootsuite
